Daily Method of Operation (DMO)
As Gordon Hester notes in his
Blog, "effective time
management is one of the biggest challenges for people in society today.
Time management evolves around two words – plan and control. In short, you
need a plan in order to meet your needs in all areas of your life and you
have to remain in control of your time as much as possible. However,
awareness is only the first step in the process. You can build a better
plan and even figure out how to gain more control, however without
integration change will be minimal at best. One of the best integration
systems is your DMO. This is the routine or discipline that drives the
process. While a DMO is different for everyone, I have found 5 critical
tenets of any successful DMO that MUST be in place if you want to
maximize the value of your DMO. Those are as follows:
1. Productive Tasks
2. Scheduled Communication
3. Collection of Information
4. Proactive Time Planning
5. Self Communication Time
A good DMO may well be the most useful and simple tool that
anyone can use to improve time management. If you build in the five
tenets of a DMO that I outlined above, I am confident that this strategy
will make a profound difference in your life." You can listen to
Gordon's voicecom message on this
subject.
The Virtual Franchise Owner's Manual (Chapter 6)
gives us some excellent tips on what to include in our DMO, especially if
we are determined and committed to success with our business:
1. Pass out two CDs/DVDs a day, five days a
week and follow up (and get people to watch a video online).
2. Listen to team training calls each week
(ours are on Monday nights)
3. Host Wellness Presentations( for yourself
or your teammates).
4. Identify customers who would be
ideal business prospects (discuss them with your sponsor/coach).
5. Attend all trainings and special events
with guests.
6. Check Voicecom daily.
Your DMO needs to focus you on high-payoff activities
(the productive tasks Gordon talks about).
Completing and staying focused on this
2x2x2x2 Planning Sheet
will help you make sure you are doing those things that really pay you
well,
because 90%+ of your time needs to be spent communicating with people -
preferably in person or by phone.
You’ve
heard it said, “plan your work and work your plan” and “people don’t plan
to fail; they just fail to plan.” Good, focused planning will help your
business consistently grow and bring balance to your life.
Speaking of 'balance', Getting Things Done by David Allen is an excellent
book for those wanting to make the most of their time, and wanting to
simplify their lives, restoring balance in the process - who wouldn't want that?! We've used his simple
system to great effect. David's GTD rests on the principle that
we need to move tasks out of our minds by recording them externally. That
way, the mind is freed from the job of remembering everything that needs
to be done, and can concentrate on actually performing those tasks.
Freedom is one result, another is, well, efficiency.
Go to work on your plan and as you complete each week,
take time to evaluate your activity and your progress.
Track your results. Adjust your plan as needed.
