Coaching II
WHY GET A COACH?
by David Beavers, NMD
Part 1
The men and women I coach on a regular basis are good at
doing the Juice Plus+ business. That's pretty much the way I found
them. They were not novices when we hooked up.
They have a bunch of Preferred Customers. Their businesses
are qualifying month after month. They can do Wellness Presentations in
their sleep.
They always show up. They wouldn't think about missing a
Leadership Conference. I can count on them. Voice com is becoming a
daily ritual.
They have written goals. And, they are clear--crystal
clear--on why they are doing this business.
Two of them are National Marketing Directors. The rest of
them are not. Not yet, anyway. But, every person in that second group
is already working on her NMD speech--visualizing her date with destiny
when she hears her name called, walks across the stage and tells her
story to six-thousand people.
Here's a good question: Why would these people need a
coach?
The first part of the answer is a paradox.
Over the years, I have found that the people who value and
appreciate their Juice Plus+ business the most--the distributors who
seem to know what they are doing and don't appear to need much
help--they are the ones who will seek out a coach.
They will look for a mentor. They will search for and find
a leader who can guide them toward the level of success they want for
themselves and their families.
The people who could really use some coaching are usually
not very interested in going down that road. Maybe the timing isn't
quite right for them. Serious coaching may come later. The whole thing
can be a little intimidating-a coaching relationship requires some
openness to change, some vulnerability and more personal
accountability.
But then, there are those who want to get better. Who
understand that they still have a lot to learn. Who are willing to be
uncomfortable-to stretch and grow and struggle with their own personal
development. Who are hungry for feedback. In a word--who are COACHABLE.
Part 2
There's a second part in my answer to the question: Why
would motivated and gifted distributors need a coach?
I was clueless about this component a few years ago. The
answer is obvious to me now. Today, it's probably the most compelling
reason why I coach people. The reason I coach is to show people how to
become more intentional.
Let me tell you about Mary. I don't actually coach anyone
named Mary. She's a composite of many people on my team.
When coaching Mary, I want to inject into her life a
strong sense of intentionality. That means that I will:
-
Ask her the kind of questions that will enable her to
see which activities with which people are going to take her business
to the next level.
-
Assist her in developing a plan with written goals
around those activities and with those key people.
-
Encourage her to set deadlines for when those activities
and objectives are going to happen.
-
Give her a way to inform me when her commitments and
objectives have been fulfilled.
Mary understands that coaching is not something else to
throw on top of her pile of things to do and people to see. Our
coaching call is sacred time. She's knows that our call is going to
help her sort through, then shrink down her priorities t o just a
few--only those things which will help her grow her business.
Before she got involved with coaching, she was busy with a
lot of random activities, treating every phone call and every kind of
contact with the same sense of urgency. From talking and listening on
the coaching calls, she's grasping the difference between just being
busy, and being productive.
Mary and I are going to create a plan--something that Jane
Deuber calls "agreed actions and accountability." Now, Mary will have a
track to follow, and a much better chance of working her business with
fewer distractions and more consistency.
Coaching will give Mary permission to say "No" to the
things that won't help her accomplish her goals. She's learning what it
feels like to do the business on purpose.
This is why we need coaching. Through effective coaching,
we can move from just having good intentions, to actually doing the
business with intentionality.
